The head of faith is the highest position in a given Faith. It is controlled by the Head of Faith doctrine, which determines whether it has a Spiritual or Temporal head of faith, or none at all. They are responsible for declaring Great Holy Wars if their Faith's Tenets allow them.
Heads of faith gain +1.0 piety per month.[1]
Spiritual heads of faith
A spiritual head of faith is a title given to a prominent clergy member. They can bestow gold or claims on pious characters. If the faith's divorce doctrines is set to "Must be approved", they will oversee divorces in place of dynasty heads.
A spiritual head of faith can declared Undirected great holy wars. These will be led by the head of faith.
Temporal heads of faith
A temporal head of faith is a title held by a landed ruler, and also requires the Lay Person doctrine. The temporal head of faith is given to the founder of the faith, and inherited by the primary heir as long as they are of the faith. The title will also be inherited normally by the heir.
A temporal head of faith can declare Directed great holy wars.
No head of faith
If no head of faith is enabled, the faith will have a floor of 25% fervor and will not go down further.
Excommunication
With the Communion tenet, the head of faith may excommunicate other characters. This grants the target character with the Excommunicated trait, and allows other characters of the same faith to declare war using the Excommunication War casus belli.
